(Baonghean.vn) - The US has begun massively transferring a large quantity of weapons to Poland and Latvia as part of NATO's program to strengthen security on its eastern flank.

US tanks and combat vehicles began arriving at the Dutch port of Vlissingen on January 11th, en route to Poland and Lithuania as part of NATO's efforts to bolster its eastern flank. Colonel Robert Kellam, the US operations officer, confirmed: "Approximately 1,250 pieces of military equipment are arriving at this port."

The vehicles included M-1 Abrams tanks and Bradley fighting vehicles from the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas.

Following Russia's launch of the war in Ukraine last February, NATO has been reinforcing its combat groups in countries from the Baltic Sea in the north to the Black Sea in the south.

In December 2022, the U.S. transferred approximately 700 combat vehicles to Poland, including Abrams tanks. This was done under the "Atlantic Resolve" program, which began in 2014 to strengthen the U.S. presence in Europe. Under the program, various parts of the U.S. Army deploy separate units to Europe to be stationed in countries on NATO's eastern flank.

Moscow has repeatedly noted that NATO advocates confrontation. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov previously called the alliance's actions in Iraq, Libya, and the former Yugoslavia a tragedy, where the right to life of the people was trampled upon by NATO "in the most brutal and illegal way." At the same time, as the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Peskov, stressed, the expansion of the bloc will not bring greater security to Europe.
