North Korean media said the country's government has decided to take "important and practical measures to deter war."

North Korea's state news agency KCNA said today (March 12) that the decision was made at the 5th enlarged meeting of the 8th Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party of Korea, chaired by leader Kim Jong-un.

“The conference discussed and adopted important practical steps for more effective, powerful and offensive use of the country’s war deterrence in the face of the current situation where the provocative actions of the US and South Korea are approaching the red line,” the statement released by KCNA said.

However, the statement did not specify what measures the Pyongyang government would take to deal with provocations from Seoul and Washington.

According to Yonhap news agency, the above announcement was published by North Korean media in the context that the US and South Korea will hold the "Freedom Shield" exercise lasting 11 days, starting tomorrow (March 13). Pyongyang has long condemned the exercises of these two allied countries as "rehearsal for invasion".

Ms. Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, also announced earlier this week that the joint military exercises between the US and South Korea are increasing tensions in the Korean peninsula.
