North Korea approves the deployment of war deterrence measures.
North Korean media reported that the government has decided to implement "important and practical measures to deter war."
North Korea's state news agency KCNA reported today (March 12) that the decision was made at the 5th Expanded Meeting of the 8th Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party of Korea, chaired by leader Kim Jong-un.

"The conference discussed and adopted important practical steps to more effectively, powerfully, and aggressively utilize the country's war deterrence capabilities in the current situation, as provocative actions by the U.S. and South Korea are approaching a red line," the KCNA statement read.
However, the statement did not specify what measures the Pyongyang government would take to counter provocations from Seoul and Washington.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the statement was released by North Korean media amid the upcoming 11-day "Freedom Shield" military exercise between the United States and South Korea, starting tomorrow (March 13). Pyongyang has long condemned these exercises by the two allies as "rehearsal for invasion."
Kim Yo Jong, the powerful younger sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, also stated earlier this week that joint military exercises between the US and South Korea are increasing tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
