*Proposal to submit to the Standing Committee of the National Assembly a draft law onthe right to gender transition and recognition of a new genderThis was one of the key issues discussed at the 13th session of the National Assembly's Law Committee.
The draft Law on Gender Identity, which stipulates the right to gender reassignment and the recognition of a new gender, different from the gender assigned at birth, upon the citizen's request, has been proposed by National Assembly delegate Nguyen Anh Tri of Hanoi to be included in the 2024 Law and Ordinance Drafting Program. As of November 25, 2021, Vietnam's population was over 98 million, with an estimated 500,000 transgender people. This means that approximately half a million people have not had their personal rights fully protected, and some have even been subjected to violations. The percentage of transgender people who have ever been married is very low, only 1.4%, while the majority are single and have never married. Furthermore, over 81% of transgender people surveyed have never publicly disclosed their gender identity.
