Tips on how to properly and safely overtake vehicles traveling in the same direction.
In addition to acquiring knowledge, drivers need to hone their overtaking skills and experience to ensure safety and avoid dangerous situations while driving.
Don't drive too close to the car in front when preparing to overtake.
Drivers need to maintain a safe driving distance, avoiding driving too close to the vehicle in front, as this can restrict visibility and reduce the ability to react to unexpected situations. Furthermore, when obstacles or oncoming vehicles suddenly appear, driving too close to the vehicle ahead poses a significant risk of accidents.

Do not overtake immediately after signaling to do so.
Drivers should use turn signals, honk the horn, or flash headlights to signal to the vehicle in front when overtaking. After signaling, the driver should wait a few seconds to ensure the other vehicle receives the signal and responds. If the vehicle in front signals in the direction of the intended overtake or uses emergency lights, the driver should avoid overtaking because the vehicle ahead may not be allowing it.
Overcome decisively
When overtaking a car, drivers should accelerate decisively, avoiding maintaining a parallel position with the vehicle in front for too long. If the driver of the car is level with the front of the vehicle in front, they can pause for 1-2 seconds to observe the situation and accelerate to overtake if it is safe and clear.
Merge safely and maintain speed.
After overtaking another vehicle, drivers should avoid merging into the lane immediately; they should also check their rearview mirrors to ensure a safe distance and avoid cutting in front of the vehicle they just overtook. Furthermore, if the overtake is successful, drivers should maintain their speed, avoiding sudden deceleration that could cause unexpected situations and prevent the vehicle behind from reacting in time. This could lead to dangerous collisions on the road.
Do not overtake multiple vehicles at once.
It is not advisable to overtake multiple vehicles at once because it is very dangerous. This makes it difficult for the driver to observe all the traffic ahead, control the vehicle's speed, and signal to other vehicles in front in a timely manner. However, if the vehicles are moving in a convoy at a steady speed and close to the right, overtaking may be considered if safety conditions permit.
Do not overtake.
If you're planning to overtake and see the vehicle in front also starting to overtake, you should immediately apply the brakes and reduce speed. Wait until the vehicle in front has finished overtaking and the situation is clear and stable before overtaking. Absolutely do not follow closely behind an overtaking vehicle. Doing so puts the driver completely vulnerable and unable to observe the road ahead. Encountering an oncoming vehicle would be extremely dangerous.
The regulations regarding overtaking vehicles in Article 14 of the 2008 Road Traffic Law are as follows:
When a vehicle requests to overtake, it is only permitted to do so when it observes that there are no obstacles ahead, no oncoming vehicles are visible in the section of road where the driver intends to overtake, the vehicle ahead is not signaling and is also attempting to overtake, and that vehicle has moved to the right shoulder sufficiently to allow the overtaking vehicle to pass.
When requesting to overtake, vehicles must signal with their horn or lights. In densely populated areas or urban areas, between 10 PM and 5 AM, only light signals are permitted when requesting to overtake.
When a vehicle ahead receives a signal from a vehicle behind requesting to overtake, if it is safe to do so, the driver of the vehicle ahead should reduce speed and move to the right side of the road until the overtaking vehicle has safely passed. It is strictly prohibited to obstruct or hinder the overtaking vehicle when it is safe to do so.
