'Blockbuster' Mbappe makes perfect debut, Real Madrid wins European Super Cup
Blockbuster rookie Kylian Mbappe had a perfect debut when he was selected to start in the European Super Cup match between Real Madrid and Atalanta.
Newcomer Kylian Mbappe was chosen by coach Ancelotti to start for Real Madrid and in his debut match for the new team he played with Vinicius and Rodrygo in attack, while Bellingham - Valverde - Tchouameni made up the midfield trio.
Atalanta lost many important players for many reasons, so coach Gasperini accepted to rely on the individual brilliance of the Ademola Lookman - Charles De Ketelaere pair in attack while using a 3-4-1-2 formation with a large defense.
Despite being underestimated, Atalanta played their game without hesitation and even hit the Real Madrid crossbar after a deflected shot from De Roon. On Real Madrid's side, the opportunity was not taken advantage of when Vinicius missed Carvajal's pass in the 17th minute before Rodrygo's unfortunate shot hit the crossbar in the 45+1 minute.
Pasalic almost opened the scoring for Atalanta early in the second half, but Courtois flew to block the header. When the next clear chance arose, Real Madrid scored. Vinicius broke down the left wing and crossed for Valverde to tap into the empty net.
The goal made the game much easier for Real, they missed a few more chances but still got the second goal thanks to new signing Mbappe after a pass from Bellingham. At the end of the match, both teams had chances to score but no more goals were scored.
Winning 2-0, Real Madrid won the European Super Cup for the 6th time and set a record for the number of times they won this trophy. The performance in Warsaw will help Real continue to be the candidate for the championship in all the arenas they will participate in the 2024/2025 season.
