Rice price increased by 2,000 VND/kg, Nghe An farmers are excited
As of August 14, Nghe An has harvested over 7,000 hectares of summer-autumn rice, mainly in low-lying areas of Yen Thanh and Dien Chau districts. The high price of early-season rice this year has made farmers very excited.
Rice prices increase, easy to consume
By August 12, Ta Thi Nga's family in Hamlet 7, Minh Chau Commune, Dien Chau District had finished harvesting 7 sao of rice. As the area is low-lying and prone to flooding, every year she plants short-term rice varieties and harvests them early to avoid flooding. She has now sold nearly 2 tons of TBR97 and Ha Phat 3 rice.
"This year, the price of rice is higher than last year. Traders buy it immediately at 8,500 VND/kg of dry rice, 2,500 VND/kg higher than last summer-autumn crop," said Ms. Nga.

Due to some low-lying areas, Dien Nguyen commune has started harvesting summer-autumn rice more than a week ago. Ms. Bui Thi Thu, an agricultural officer of the commune, said: This year's summer-autumn crop in the area has more than 33 hectares supported to make a model for producing high-quality rice variety TBR97, which has been harvested; in addition, some areas in the more low-lying hamlets in the South such as Tan Canh, Tan Phong and Tan Thinh have also been harvested. It is expected that in less than a week, the whole commune will finish harvesting 373 hectares of summer-autumn rice.

“Currently, TBR 97 rice can be purchased at 6,500 VND/kg of fresh rice right in the field, but due to the increasing trend of rice prices, TBR97 rice is of good quality and delicious, so people have not sold it yet,” said Ms. Bui Thi Thu.
Buy fresh rice right at the field
This summer-autumn crop, Ms. Nguyen Thi Van's family in Vien Thanh commune, Yen Thanh district planted 4 sao of rice. When the rice was ripe, she took advantage of the favorable weather to rent a harvester to harvest the entire area in just 1 day.
“My family has few people so I only grow quality rice varieties in the spring crop for food. In the summer-autumn crop, I grow all the high-yielding Khang Dan rice and only save a little for small-scale farming in my family. The rest is sold fresh rice right in the field. Last year, the price of fresh rice was less than 6,000 VND/kg, but this year the rice is good, the yield is good and the selling price has increased to 6,500 VND/kg, so I am very happy,” Ms. Van said excitedly.

Working as a rice seller for 15 years, every year Ms. Nguyen Thi Nghiem in Bao Thanh commune buys hundreds of tons of rice from farmers in Bao Thanh, Long Thanh, Vien Thanh, Son Thanh communes... For many years now, people in the area have focused on growing high-quality rice varieties in the spring crop for food, while in the summer-autumn crop they almost only grow Khang Dan rice for sale.
Therefore, in addition to purchasing sticky rice but in insignificant quantities and mainly for retail, each summer-autumn crop, Ms. Nghiem purchases about 300 tons of Khang Dan rice, supplying regular customers in the provinces who order tons at a time to serve the needs of baking and raising livestock, scattered from now until the end of the year.

Currently, Khang Dan rice is being purchased at 8,400 VND/kg of dried rice and 6,500 VND/kg of fresh rice right in the field.
“Every year, the price is only 8,000 VND/kg of dry rice, and in some years, like during the Covid-19 pandemic, it was only 6,000 VND/kg. This year, the price of rice has increased, so it is easier to buy and people are more focused on selling,” said Ms. Nguyen Thi Nghiem.
By August 14, in some localities such as Yen Thanh, Dien Chau, Thanh Chuong... farmers had gone to the fields to harvest summer-autumn rice. Of which, Dien Chau district alone had harvested nearly 3,400 hectares, Yen Thanh district more than 3,500 hectares...
Initial assessment shows that this year's summer-autumn rice crop is good, rice prices are high, so farmers are very excited. In many areas, people sell fresh rice right in the fields, which not only brings high efficiency but also saves the work of drying and preserving in the current rainy and sunny conditions and erratic weather.
