Rice prices have increased by 2,000 VND/kg, bringing joy to farmers in Nghe An province.
By August 14th, Nghe An province had harvested over 7,000 hectares of summer-autumn rice, mainly in the low-lying areas of Yen Thanh and Dien Chau districts. The high rice prices at the beginning of this year's harvest have brought great joy to farmers.
Rice prices are rising, making it easy to sell.
By August 12th, the family of Ms. Ta Thi Nga in Hamlet 7, Minh Chau Commune, Dien Chau District, had finished harvesting 7 sao (approximately 0.7 hectares) of rice. Because it's a low-lying area prone to flooding, every year she plants short-day rice varieties and harvests early to avoid the floods. She has already sold nearly 2 tons of TBR97 and Ha Phat 3 rice.
"This year, rice prices are higher than last year. Traders are buying it immediately at 8,500 VND/kg of dry rice, which is 2,500 VND/kg higher than last year's summer-autumn crop," said Ms. Nga.
Due to some low-lying areas, Dien Nguyen commune began harvesting its summer-autumn rice crop more than a week ago. Ms. Bui Thi Thu, an agricultural officer in the commune, said: This year, over 33 hectares in the commune received support for the production model of high-quality TBR97 rice variety, and the harvest has now been completed; in addition, some areas in the southern, lower-lying hamlets such as Tan Canh, Tan Phong, and Tan Thinh have also been harvested. It is expected that the entire commune will finish harvesting 373 hectares of summer-autumn rice in less than a week.
"Currently, TBR 97 rice can be purchased at 6,500 VND/kg of fresh paddy right in the field, but due to the upward trend in rice prices and the high quality and delicious taste of TBR 97 rice, farmers are not selling it yet," said Ms. Bui Thi Thu.
We buy fresh rice directly from the fields.
This year, during the summer-autumn crop season, Ms. Nguyen Thi Van's family in Vien Thanh commune, Yen Thanh district, planted 4 sao (approximately 0.4 hectares) of rice. Taking advantage of the favorable weather, she hired a harvesting machine to harvest the entire area in just one day.
“Because our family is small, we only plant high-quality rice varieties in the spring for our own consumption. In the summer-autumn season, I grow only Khang Dan rice, which yields high productivity, and only keep a small amount for small-scale livestock farming within the family. The rest is sold fresh right in the field. Last year, the price of fresh rice was less than 6,000 VND/kg, but this year the rice is beautiful, the yield is high, and the selling price has increased to 6,500 VND/kg, so I'm very happy,” Ms. Van said excitedly.
Having worked as a rice trader for 15 years, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Nghiem in Bao Thanh commune buys hundreds of tons of rice annually from farmers in Bao Thanh, Long Thanh, Vien Thanh, Son Thanh communes, and other areas. For many years, local people have focused on planting high-quality rice varieties in the spring for consumption, while in the summer-autumn season they mostly grow Khang Dan rice for sale.
Therefore, besides purchasing glutinous rice in insignificant quantities, mainly for retail sale, each summer-autumn season Ms. Nghiem buys about 300 tons of Khang Dan rice, supplying it to regular customers in various provinces who order tons at a time for making cakes and animal feed, scattered throughout the year.
Currently, Khang Dan rice is being purchased at 8,400 VND/kg for dried rice and 6,500 VND/kg for fresh rice right in the field.
"Every year the price is only 8,000 VND/kg of dried rice, and in some years, like during the Covid-19 pandemic, it was as low as 6,000 VND/kg. This year, the price of rice has increased significantly, making it easier to purchase, and farmers are selling more actively," said Ms. Nguyen Thi Nghiem.

Initial assessments indicate a bumper crop of summer-autumn rice this year, and the high price of rice has brought great joy to farmers. In many areas, farmers are selling fresh rice directly in the fields, which not only brings high efficiency but also saves the effort of drying and preserving it in the current unpredictable weather conditions.
