The Modern-Day Phenomenon of Pretense and Showmanship - Viewed from Ethical and Legal Standards

In modern society, we cannot deny that with the development of social media, many dishonest and shady behaviors have gradually taken over the "platform." One of these is "showing off"—acting of impersonation and pretense to impress the community. In particular, this behavior has gone too far, violating not only ethical standards but also the law.

Ugly behavior

"Show-off" refers to the act of falsifying or deceiving oneself to create a positive impression on others, often manifested through boasting or "showing off" on social media platforms. A typical example is the falsification of donation amounts in charity campaigns. Many people are willing to use image editing tools to fake the amount of money they have contributed, creating a deception about their generosity.

This not only reflects a lack of honesty but also has serious consequences. It creates distrust in the community, eroding confidence in charitable activities and organizations. When generosity becomes a tool for those who are merely putting on a show to build their image, the genuine value of relief efforts is significantly diminished. This is a serious ethical issue, because charitable support should stem from sincerity and responsibility, not as a performance to impress.

Manifestations of poor morality and low culture.

From an ethical standpoint, hypocrisy is a disrespectful act towards the community and the person committing it. This deceit and dishonesty reflect a disregard for core societal values, especially in the context of natural disasters and hardship.

As mentioned in the case, many people exploit the country's difficult situation, natural disasters, and floods to create a false image of their contributions. This is reprehensible behavior, because instead of genuinely helping, they are merely trying to "show off" and "shine."

Those who are truly suffering in natural disasters and floods are the ones who need help, and every contribution is significant. However, when hypocritical behavior becomes widespread, it not only erodes public trust in charitable organizations but also diminishes the value of genuinely commendable actions. Those who engage in such hypocritical acts undermine the spirit of sharing and sincerity, causing the community to become increasingly skeptical and apprehensive about charitable activities.

Illegal behavior

The act of "falsely claiming credit" is not only a violation of ethics, but in many cases, it goes further and violates the law. Falsifying or exploiting trust to misappropriate assets in charitable activities can be prosecuted under the Vietnamese Penal Code. According to Article 175 of the 2015 Penal Code, amended in 2017, anyone who abuses trust to misappropriate assets will face severe penalties.

For example, if an individual is authorized or entrusted with managing charitable funds and then abuses that trust to misappropriate or misuse them, they may face criminal prosecution with prison sentences ranging from 6 months to 20 years, depending on the value of the misappropriated funds.

Furthermore, according to Article 15 of Decree 144/2021/ND-CP, the act of using fraudulent means to misappropriate donated funds for charitable activities may be subject to administrative penalties if the amount misappropriated is less than 2 million VND and does not reach the level of criminal liability. However, this does not mean that such "deceptive" acts are harmless. Although the administrative penalty may only be between 2 million and 3 million VND, it still leaves a negative impact on the reputation of charitable activities and the trust of the community.

Negative consequences for society

The practice of "showing off" not only affects the individuals involved but also has serious consequences for society as a whole. When dishonesty and pretense become widespread, public trust in charitable and relief efforts is damaged. This can lead to people becoming more hesitant to contribute to charitable organizations, reducing the effectiveness of these activities.

Furthermore, genuinely charitable individuals and organizations may face increased suspicion and scrutiny from the public and authorities. This can create unnecessary pressure and hinder efforts to effectively help those in need.

Strong measures are needed.

To prevent and minimize fraudulent activities, strong measures are needed from both the legal system and the community. The law needs to strengthen oversight and strictly punish acts of forgery and misappropriation of assets under the guise of charity. At the same time, the community needs to raise awareness of the importance of honesty and transparency in charitable activities.

Only when each individual and organization demonstrates honesty and responsibility can we build a trustworthy society and achieve our philanthropic goals effectively. Pretending to be virtuous may bring short-term glamour, but in the long run, it only leads to a loss of credibility and true value in the eyes of the community.

Showing off might bring short-term glamour to an individual, but in the long run, it only causes them to lose credibility and true value in the eyes of the community.

The habit of "showing off" not only violates ethical standards but also breaks the law, causing many serious consequences for society. To build a better community, we need to eliminate this behavior by raising awareness and adhering to the law, while always respecting the values of honesty and sincerity in all our actions.
