Impersonating prison officials to deceive the families of inmates.
The police have issued an emergency arrest warrant for Le Tuan Dung (born in 1997) on charges of "fraudulent appropriation of property".
Le Tuan Dung (residing in Thanh Hoa City, Thanh Hoa Province) previously had a criminal record for the crime of "Fraudulent appropriation of propertyThrough searching and exploiting information on social media platforms like Facebook, news websites of provinces and cities in general, and "Son La News" in particular, to discover posts related to cases, suspects, and defendants... who were arrested, prosecuted, and tried by functional units; the suspect Le Tuan Dung established relationships with relatives and friends of the suspects, defendants, and prisoners currently detained or imprisoned, then used a Facebook account under the name "Tuan Dung" to impersonate someone who had committed a crime or was currently detained or serving a sentence to contact their families, claiming hardship, remorse, and asking for money to reduce their sentences.
When the family agreed and trusted him, Dung gave them his phone number and introduced it as the contact number of a prison or detention center official for them to contact. After being contacted by the family of the detained person or prisoner, Dung impersonated a prison or detention center official to request the family transfer money to the account he used to arrange for the prisoner to be transferred to a less strenuous job and to receive assistance in reducing the sentence.
Using similar tactics, Le Tuan Dung contacted many people, some of whom, trusting him, transferred money. Specifically in Son La province, investigations revealed that in August 2024, Le Tuan Dung embezzled 22 million VND from the family of inmate LVT and 8 million VND from the family of inmate VVT.
The case is currently being investigated and expanded by the Son La Provincial Police Investigation Agency; they are also announcing the methods and tactics used by the suspect.
