Authorities arrest suspect for impersonating government official to defraud and steal property.
Chu Thi Hang impersonated a government official and posted articles on social media claiming that people could buy cars at cheap prices, then defrauded buyers of their deposit money.
On August 22nd, the Bac Giang Provincial Police announced that they have initiated legal proceedings against Chu Thi Hang (born in 1983), residing in Trinh Nhi village, An Ninh commune, Tien Hai district (Thai Binh province), for the crime of "Fraudulent appropriation of property." She used the tactic of impersonating a government official and posting articles on social media claiming to be able to purchase cars at cheap prices, then appropriating the deposit money from buyers.
Accordingly, through intelligence gathering, the Criminal Police Department of Bac Giang Provincial Police discovered a suspect believed to be committing the crime of "Fraudulent appropriation of property" by impersonating a government official and posting articles on social media claiming that cars could be purchased at a low price, then appropriating the deposit money from buyers.
Through investigative measures, after a period of verification and tracking the suspect, on August 15th, the Bac Giang Provincial Police arrested Chu Thi Hang while she was in Ward 10, Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City.
It is known that Chu Thi Hang is unemployed and has a prior conviction for "theft of property".
To obtain money for personal expenses, Hang posted numerous messages on social media platforms such as Zalo and TikTok, impersonating a warehouse management officer of the Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department and providing false information about her ability to purchase cars at prices lower than the listed market price.
To build trust with buyers, Hang posted about successful car deliveries, thank-you gifts for customers, and charitable donations to schools and shelters.
From June 2023 until her arrest, using the above method, Chu Thi Hang embezzled car purchase deposits from many people totaling more than 4.6 billion VND.
The Investigation Police Department of Bac Giang province is continuing to expand the investigation and will strictly handle the case according to the law.
