Yokohama's farewell to Cong Phuong
Many people reacted to Yokohama FC's farewell on social media. Whether joking or sarcastic, this is not just the story of Cong Phuong specifically, but also reflects a part of the reality when Vietnamese players go abroad.
The harsh reality
"Cong Phuong is loved by everyone for his kind personality. His teammates will feel sad that they will no longer be able to enjoy the delicious coffee he brewed in the locker room. Cong Phuong is a strong player in front of goal and has excellent technique. We wish Cong Phuong good luck on his next journey." This was the farewell message Yokohama FC sent to Cong Phuong when he decided to leave the team after nearly two seasons.
The farewell message also included the following text on the Yokohama FC photo: "Welcome to Cong Phuong Cafe"
In a way, Yokohama FC's actions can be simply interpreted as joking, teasing, or "trolling"—a humorous way of referring to the situation.Cong PhuongThey don't get many opportunities to play and contribute directly in matches.
However, this humor could be misinterpreted as sarcasm, mockery (or, at the very least, a misunderstanding), and could be hurtful when placed in the context of a foreign player's efforts to showcase their talent in another country.
WithVietnamese fansThis could give rise to feelings of disrespect, simply because Cong Phuong is one of Vietnam's top football talents in the J. League.

It's unclear whether Yokohama's intention was a joke or sarcasm, but many teammates also posted similar images and captions about Cong Phuong on their personal pages. Notably, even in the final match against Ventforet Kofu, Yokohama did not register Cong Phuong in the player list.
But perhaps the most heartbreaking aspect isn't that, but the fact that many Vietnamese players struggle to prove their abilities when playing abroad.

Of course, this stems from many reasons: differences in physical attributes, technique, football culture, and even a lack of confidence when competing in a harsh environment. Cong Phuong, like many other players before him such as Xuan Truong, Tuan Anh, Quang Hai… all faced similar situations.
Self-respect fuels determination to strive for success.
However, instead of being overly pessimistic or feeling inferior, we need to look at the issue openly and realistically. The Vietnamese players...go abroadAlthough he hasn't achieved the success he hoped for, Công Phượng, a star in Vietnam, has become like a... "janitor" in Japan.
But these are still important steps. They carry with them a desire to improve and learn, something not everyone dares to do.

Failure, if any, is also a valuable lesson for Vietnamese football to mature. Each setback will create an opportunity to improve, to reassess weaknesses, and from there, to develop a more suitable strategy for the future that lies ahead.
Cong Phuong's story reflects a reality not only in football, but also in many other fields. Vietnamese people going abroad don't always achieve the success they expect. But instead of focusing solely on failure, we need a more optimistic outlook, encouraging the efforts and challenges of individuals. A failure shouldn't discourage us, but rather motivate us to strive even harder.
Lessons from China
Let's recall the story of the Chinese. They participated in the Olympics for the first time in 1952, but it wasn't until 1984 that they won their first Olympic medal, thanks to Xu Haifeng's victory in shooting.
During those years of defeat, the Chinese were subjected to much ridicule and humiliation from Europeans and Americans. Therefore, Xu Haifeng's victory not only brought China its first gold medal but also held special significance, marking a crucial turning point in the country's sports history. Following this, China continuously strived to rise and surpassed its former status to become one of the world's two sporting superpowers, second only to the United States.

The story of China from its early Olympic days is a powerful testament to the spirit of overcoming failure: using pride to rise up, swallowing humiliation to move forward. This journey is not just a story about sports, but also a great lesson about willpower and perseverance in all fields.
China has used setbacks as motivation, fostering determination and developing a long-term plan. They rely not only on individual potential but also on building a systematic, scientific approach to athlete training. China recognizes that sports are not just the strength of an individual or a team, but the overall strength of a national sports management system. This is a combination of financial investment, modern facilities, and, most importantly, a strategic training methodology.
Vietnamese sportsThere are still many difficulties and limitations. What is essential is a sound strategy, strong investment, and especially a spirit of continuous striving and learning. We should not be afraid of failure, but rather turn those failures into motivation. Vietnamese sports can absolutely rise and become a source of national pride if we remain steadfast and know how to build a solid foundation from the roots.
