Prosecution and arrest of woman who swindled and appropriated tens of billions of dong
Taking advantage of her and her husband's relationships, Thu used the excuse of needing large capital for business and then borrowed money from many people, embezzling tens of billions of dong.
On September 26, the Investigation Police Agency of Da Nang City Police issued decisions to prosecute the accused and execute an arrest warrant for Le Thi Thu (48 years old), residing in Nai Hien Dong ward, Son Tra district, Da Nang for the act of "Fraudulent appropriation of property”.
According to the initial investigation, taking advantage of her husband's relationships with fellow countrymen, relatives, and colleagues, Le Thi Thu gave false information that she needed money for business and asked to borrow money, then appropriated billions of dong from many people.
Specifically, taking advantage of her relationship with fellow countrymen, Thu told Ms. H. (47 years old), residing in Tho Quang ward, Son Tra district, that she needed capital for business and borrowed more than 20.4 billion VND.
However, after borrowing money from Ms. H., Thu did not do business but used it to pay interest to others or used the later loan to pay the previous loan. When she was no longer able to pay, Thu used the excuse of the pandemic and business losses to go bankrupt.
After many times of asking for the money she had lent back but failed, Ms. H. had to file a complaint against Thu and send it to the police for intervention.
During the police investigation, Thu transferred more than 13.8 billion VND to Ms. H. and appropriated the remaining 6.6 billion VND.
In addition, during the investigation and verification of the case, the Da Nang City Police Department also received 5 petitions from citizens accusing Le Thi Thu of "Fraudulent appropriation of property".
Most of the victims' complaints said that they had trusted their acquaintances, relatives, fellow countrymen, and even some of them were Thu's husband's colleagues, so they lent them money. The lowest amount was more than 300 million VND and the highest amount was nearly 2 billion VND.
Currently, the police continue to consolidate documents and evidence to handle the case according to the provisions of law.
