Woman prosecuted and arrested for defrauding tens of billions of VND.
Taking advantage of her and her husband's connections, Thu used the excuse of needing a large amount of capital for her business to borrow money from many people, ultimately embezzling tens of billions of dong.
On September 26th, the Criminal Investigation Agency of the Da Nang City Police served the indictment decisions and executed the arrest warrant for Le Thi Thu (48 years old), residing in Nai Hien Dong ward, Son Tra district, Da Nang, for the crime of "Fraudulent appropriation of property"
According to initial investigations, taking advantage of her relationships with fellow villagers, relatives, and her husband's colleagues, Le Thi Thu provided false information claiming she needed money for business and asked to borrow, subsequently defrauding many people of billions of dong.
Specifically, taking advantage of their friendship and shared hometown, Thu told Ms. H. (47 years old), residing in Tho Quang ward, Son Tra district, that she needed capital for her business and borrowed over 20.4 billion VND.
However, after borrowing money from Ms. H., Thu did not use it for business but instead used it to pay interest to others or to repay previous loans. When she could no longer repay, Thu claimed that the pandemic and business losses led to bankruptcy.
After repeatedly trying to get back the money she had lent but failing, Ms. H. had to file a complaint against Thu with the police, seeking their intervention.
During the police investigation, Thu returned over 13.8 billion VND to Ms. H., while embezzling the remaining 6.6 billion VND.
In addition, during the investigation and verification of the case, the Criminal Investigation Department of the Da Nang City Police also received 5 letters from citizens accusing Le Thi Thu of "fraudulent appropriation of property".
Most of the victims' complaints stated that they lent money because they trusted acquaintances, relatives, fellow villagers, and even colleagues of Thu's husband. The smallest loan was over 300 million VND, while the largest amount reached nearly 2 billion VND.
The police are currently gathering further documents and evidence to handle the case according to the law.
The Criminal Investigation Department of the Da Nang City Police also announced that anyone who is a victim of Le Thi Thu is invited to contact the Criminal Investigation Department of the Da Nang City Police, located at 47 Ly Tu Trong Street, to file a report.
