Young man uses fake Zalo and Facebook accounts to scam nearly half a billion VND.
Using disposable SIM cards to create multiple fake social media accounts such as Zalo and Facebook, Nguyen Thanh Toan defrauded and misappropriated approximately 450 million VND from a woman in Phu Quoc (Kien Giang province).
The Phu Quoc City Police Investigation Agency announced today (October 20) that they have urgently arrested Nguyen Thanh Toan (28 years old, residing in Duong Dong Ward, Phu Quoc City) to investigate his alleged crimes of "Fraudulent appropriation of property" and "Extortion of property".
Previously, on October 18th, the Phu Quoc City Police received a report from Ms. NKL, a resident of the area, regarding being scammed by Toan.
Investigations revealed that from April until now, Toan used disposable phones and SIM cards to create numerous fake social media accounts such as Zalo and Facebook to defraud Ms. L. of approximately 450 million VND.
On October 19th, after determining that Toan was hiding in An Giang province, the Phu Quoc City Police formed a task force to go ashore and quickly arrest Toan.
Despite being on the run, Toan continued to use a fake Facebook account to extort 20 million VND from Mrs. L's family.
The incident is still under investigation.
