Zelensky fears the US will decide Ukraine's fate behind its back.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said: "I am very confident that the United States will not do that, although I am not sure that this has never happened before."
According to the TASS news agency, Zelensky stated that the US and some European allies could decide Ukraine's fate without consulting the country.
"We don't want that happening behind Ukraine's back," he told Bloomberg. "I'm very confident that the U.S. wouldn't do that, although I'm not sure it hasn't happened before. I'm not just talking about the U.S. here, but also about some European partners."
According to the Wall Street Journal, U.S. President Donald Trump has tasked his special envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, with ending the Ukraine conflict within 100 days. Sources indicate that reaching an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin will be a far greater challenge than Trump anticipated when he declared during his campaign that, if elected, he would end the conflict before taking office.
On January 7th, Trump acknowledged that resolving the Ukraine conflict could take more than 24 hours β a timeframe he had previously stated would be sufficient during his campaign. Kellogg, however, said he wanted to reach an agreement within 100 days.
On January 21, Trump did not rule out the possibility that the US could completely stop supplying weapons to Ukraine and also stated that he was ready to meet with the Russian president βat any time.β At the same time, the new US leader said that sanctions against Russia could be tightened if the country did not agree to a deal on Ukraine.
Earlier, Putin had said that Moscow was ready to negotiate on Ukraine with the new US administration, but signaled that it was important to eliminate the root causes of the crisis. He reiterated that Russia noted the statements of Trump and his team about their desire to restore communication and make every effort to prevent World War III.
