EU ready for trade war with US
The EU is ready for a trade war with the US, but President Trump has never won previous wars.
According to RIA Novosti on February 12, Polish European Parliamentarian and former European Commissioner Janusz Lewandowski said on RMF FM radio that the European Union is ready for a trade war with the United States, but US President Donald Trump has never won in previous wars.
"We know that President Trump has not won previous tariff wars and lives in nostalgia for the turn of the century, when America lived on tariffs," said former congressman Lewandowski.
According to Mr. Lewandowski, the EU is prepared for a trade war, but in reality the bloc does not want it to happen. “Transatlantic relations are necessary in the face of real threats,” he added.
At the same time, former congressman Lewandowski called President Trump's attitude towards international partners "commercial". "We have known Trump in his last term. He turns some words into actions, others not. That is the way a businessman handles international relations," said Mr. Lewandowski.
"The countermeasure option is being seriously considered, but if the US side expresses a desire to negotiate, there are still other options. We can endure this war, but why do we need it? Trade wars make both sides poorer," the former European Commissioner affirmed.
US President Donald Trump on February 10 signed an executive order imposing a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum supplies to the country.
When signing the order at the White House, President Trump said he would follow up on February 10 with announcements of reciprocal tariffs on all countries imposing tariffs on US goods on February 11 and 12, and was considering tariffs on cars, semiconductors and pharmaceuticals.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU regretted the US decision to impose tariffs and threatened to take retaliatory measures.
