The EU is prepared for a trade war with the US, but President Trump has never won in previous wars.
According to RIA Novosti on February 12, Polish European Parliament member and former European Commissioner Janusz Lewandowski stated on RMF FM radio that the European Union is ready for a trade war with the US, but US President Donald Trump has never won a trade war before.
"We know that President Trump has not won previous trade wars and lives in nostalgia for the turn of the century, when America lived off tariffs," said former congressman Lewandowski.
According to Lewandowski, the EU has prepared for a trade war, but in reality, the bloc does not want it to happen. "Transatlantic relations are necessary when faced with real threats," he added.
Meanwhile, former congressman Lewandowski called President Trump's attitude toward international partners "commercial." "We've seen Trump in his last term. He turns some words into actions, others into things he doesn't. That's how a businessman handles international relations," Lewandowski said.
"The options for dealing with the situation are being seriously considered, but if the US expresses a desire to negotiate, there are still other options. We can endure this war, but why do we need it? Trade wars make both sides poorer," the former European Commissioner asserted.
On February 10, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum supplies to the country.
When signing the order at the White House, President Trump stated that he would follow up on the February 10th move with announcements of reciprocal tariffs on all countries that impose tariffs on US goods on February 11th and 12th, and that he was considering imposing tariffs on automobiles, semiconductor chips, and pharmaceuticals.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU regretted the US decision to impose tariffs and threatened retaliatory measures.
