Clip: Hai AnDecades ago, due to the local government arbitrarily selling land without authority, people massively built houses along the more than 1 km long Vu Giang canal (section through Lien Thanh commune, Yen Thanh district), seriously affecting the flow of the canal. Photo: Hai An Among them, many houses have been solidly built with a height of 2 to 3 floors; some other households have also filled the ground to prepare for construction in the near future. Photo: Hai An Through local research, some local residents said that in many areas along the Vu Giang canal, people have continued to dump soil and level the ground since the beginning of 2025. Photo: Hai An Although the people have repeatedly petitioned for a solution, and the district government has also conducted field inspections, the violations have not yet been completely resolved. Photo: Hai An From 1994 to 1995, the People's Committee of Lien Thanh commune allocated residential land to 76 households along the Vu Giang canal, from National Highway 7B to Cho Veo bridge and from Thong bridge to Khanh Thanh commune, and collected land use fees. It is worth noting that the allocated land is located right in the heart of Vu Giang canal. Photo: Hai An Vu Giang Canal is being "suffocated" by people dumping soil to build houses. Photo: Hai AnMr. Le Van Hong - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Yen Thanh district said: "This situation is the result of historical problems that have lasted for many years but up to now the locality has not been able to completely resolve. When buying land, households all have invoices and fully fulfill their annual tax obligations, some cases have even been granted land use right certificates by the State. Currently, local authorities are tightening management, not allowing more cases of illegal construction or expansion. Although there have been some cases of administrative sanctions, it is still difficult to completely prevent them. Even though there have been notices prohibiting buying, selling, and transferring, many households still deliberately do it." Photo: Hai An The situation of many households building permanent houses encroaching on the Vu Giang canal has been going on for many years. The authorities need to promptly implement drastic measures to handle it completely, not allowing the violations to continue and spread. At the same time, it is necessary to strengthen inspection and close supervision to prevent people from continuing to fill the canal to build houses. Photo: Hai An
