The new European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), coupled with climate change and traceability requirements, are putting great pressure on exporting countries, especially Vietnam. With production mainly based on small-scale farmers, Vietnam faces many challenges in meeting the strict standards of the EUDR.

According to Mr. Nguyen Quoc Manh, Deputy Director of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, the forest map system in Vietnam is not unified among provinces, making it difficult to determine growing areas eligible for export. In addition, the cost of certification for each small growing area is very high.

Another notable issue is that about 15-20% of the coffee area in Vietnam still does not have land use rights certificates, making it more complicated to prove legality according to European requirements. These are major barriers that the Vietnamese coffee industry needs to address if it wants to maintain its position in the international export market.

World coffee prices today

Coffee prices on the world market fell sharply on both exchanges:

Robusta Coffee (London):

Delivery in May 2025: Up 74 USD/ton, to 5,405 USD/ton.

Delivery in July 2025: Up 80 USD/ton, to 5,442 USD/ton.

Arabica Coffee (New York):

May 2025 delivery: Up 10.55 cents/lb, to 396.3 cents/lb.

July 2025 delivery: Up 10.15 cents/lb, to 388.75 cents/lb.

Arabica coffee prices have surged to a three-week high, supported by a rise in the Brazilian real. The real rose to a two-and-a-half week high against the dollar on April 23, prompting Brazilian coffee producers to reduce export demand as domestic profits improve.

Dry weather is also supporting prices. In Minas Gerais state, rainfall in the week ending April 12 was just 17.9 mm, 89% below the historical average, according to Somar Meteorologia.

Based on forecasts from two major banks, Rabobank and Itau BBA, Brazil's coffee output in the 2025-2026 crop year is estimated to decline by 3% to 6.4% compared to the previous crop year, mainly due to prolonged dry weather in 2024.

Notably, Arabica production could decline sharply by 10% to 13.6%. Meanwhile, Robusta (conilon) coffee is expected to increase by 7.3% to 12%, partly offsetting the Arabica shortfall. Robusta harvesting is currently underway in the states of Espirito Santo and Bahia.
