In Vietnam, drought in the Central Highlands is having a major impact on the coffee crop. Farmers in Dak Nong are facing a severe shortage of irrigation water during the peak of the dry season.

Meanwhile, the EU’s EUDR anti-deforestation regulation is putting pressure on major coffee exporting countries such as Vietnam, Brazil, Colombia and Indonesia. Failure to meet these strict criteria could reduce coffee supplies to the EU, leading to a global shortage and higher coffee prices.

The costs of complying with the EUDR, including traceability, forest monitoring and certification, will increase the price of the product. Conversely, countries that fail to meet the standards may divert exports to more lenient markets such as the US or China, creating a surplus of supply there and potentially lowering domestic coffee prices.

Vietnam, with its potential and long history of coffee production, has every opportunity to conquer the most demanding markets. However, to do so, the coffee industry needs to build a sustainable production chain from cultivation to processing.

Brazil’s robusta harvest has already begun, while arabica will be picked in the middle of the year. Weather forecasts show rain in Brazil’s coffee-growing regions this weekend, but drought conditions are expected to return as the dry winter begins in the southern hemisphere.
