SUMMARY OF WORK EXPERIENCE
- 1929: Joined the student union led by the Vietnam Revolutionary Youth Association.
- May 1, 1930: Arrested by the French, sentenced to life imprisonment and exiled to Con Dao Island. Released in 1936.
- 1936: Admitted to the Indochinese Communist Party, active in Hai Phong and Hanoi.
- 1939: Joined the Executive Committee of the Saigon City Party Committee, then was transferred by the Party to Central Vietnam to re-establish the Central Vietnam Regional Party Committee.
- 1941: Arrested in Vinh, sentenced to 5 years in prison, and exiled to Con Dao Island for the second time.
- 1945: Active in the Western region, Saigon-Chợ Lớn, serving as Secretary of the City Party Committee and Secretary of the Saigon-Gia Định Special Zone Party Committee.
- 1947: Served as a member of the Southern Regional Party Committee, and until 1949 as a member of the Standing Committee of the Southern Regional Party Committee.
- 1957-1960: Acting Secretary of the Southern Regional Party Committee
- 1960: At the 3rd Party Congress, he was elected to the Central Committee, serving as Secretary of the Central Bureau and Deputy Secretary of the Central Bureau for Southern Vietnam.
- 1976: Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee
- December 1976: At the 4th Party Congress, he was elected to the Central Committee, the Politburo, the Central Secretariat, and held the positions of Head of the Central Committee's Socialist Transformation Committee, Head of the Central Front's Mass Mobilization Committee, and President of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor (now the Vietnam Federation of Labor) (May 1978 - August 1980).
- December 1981: Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee
- March 1982: At the 5th Party Congress, he was elected to the Central Committee.
- June 1985: Elected to the Politburo by the Central Committee, becoming Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee.
- June 1986: Elected to the Central Party Secretariat and assigned as a Standing Member of the Secretariat.
- December 1986: At the 6th Party Congress, he was elected to the Central Committee and the Politburo, holding the position of General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party; concurrently serving as Secretary of the Central Military Party Committee (1987).
- June 1987: Member of the 8th National Assembly
- June 1991: At the 7th Party Congress, he was honored as an Advisor to the Central Executive Committee.
- June 1996: At the 8th Party Congress, he was honored as an Advisor to the Central Executive Committee.
- December 1997: Resigned as Advisor to the Central Executive Committee
- April 27, 1998: He passed away.
