SUMMARY OF WORK EXPERIENCE
- 1947-1949: Taught literacy classes in the commune. In June 1949, he was admitted to the Communist Party of Vietnam, in charge of propaganda work and served as the Chief of the Party Branch Office in the commune.
- May 1950 - August 1954: Enlisted, served as a soldier, then held positions as Squad Leader, Platoon Leader, Deputy Political Commissar of the Company, Political Commissar of the Company, 66th Regiment, 304th Division
- September 1954 - March 1955: Attended the first intermediate-level military and political training course.
- March 1955 - March 1958: He successively held the positions of Head of the Regimental Organization Subcommittee, Battalion Political Commissar; Deputy Head and then Head of Political Affairs of Regiment 66, Division 304
- April 1958: Student at the Central and Senior Political School
- June 1961 - 1966: He successively held the positions of Deputy Head of the Personnel Department and then Head of the Organization Department, Political Office of the 304th Division; subsequently served as Deputy Political Commissar and then Political Commissar of the 9th Regiment, 304th Division, Right Bank Military Region, and was a member of the Division Party Committee.
- July 1967: Joined the Tri Thien battlefield, serving as Political Commissar of Regiment 9.
- January 1968: Also served as Commander of the 9th Regiment
- 1970: Head of the Organization Department of the Tri Thien Military Region
- October 1971 - February 1974: Deputy Head of Political Affairs of the Tri Thien Military Region
- March 1974: Head of Political Affairs of the Tri Thien Military Region (later the 2nd Army Corps), Member of the Army Corps Party Committee.
- February 1978: Head of Political Affairs, then Deputy Political Commissar and Head of Political Affairs of Military Region 9
- August 1980: Deputy Commander for Political Affairs and Head of Political Department of Military Region 9, elected to the Standing Committee and then Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Military Region 9.
- March 1983: Head of Political Affairs, Military Region 9
- April 1984: Head of Political Affairs, 719th Command, he was promoted to Major General.
- 1986: Deputy Commander for Political Affairs and Head of Political Department of the 719th Command, served as a member and then Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the 719th Command.
- June 1988: Promoted to Lieutenant General
- August 1988: Deputy Head of the General Political Department of the Vietnam People's Army (in charge of organization, personnel, and security)
- June 1991: At the 7th National Congress, he was elected to the Central Committee of the Party, assigned to be the Head of the General Political Department of the Vietnam People's Army, and a Standing Member of the Central Military Party Committee (now the Central Military Commission).
- June 1992: At the 3rd Plenum of the 7th Central Committee, he was elected to the Secretariat and subsequently assigned to the Standing Committee of the Secretariat. He was promoted to the rank of General (June 1992).
- January 1994: At the mid-term national conference of the 7th Central Committee, he was elected to the Politburo.
- June 1996: At the 8th Party Congress, he was re-elected as a member of the Central Committee and subsequently elected to the Politburo by the Central Committee. He was appointed to the Standing Committee of the Politburo and assigned to serve as the Standing Member of the Politburo and concurrently Head of the Central Internal Political Security Committee.
- December 26, 1997: At the 4th Central Committee Meeting of the 8th Party Congress, he was elected General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and Secretary of the Central Military Party Committee (now the Central Military Commission).
- December 1997 - April 2001: General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, 8th term.
- October 2006: Retired from work.
- August 7, 2020: Comrade passed away.
