SUMMARY OF WORK EXPERIENCE

- 1958: Joined the revolution.

- 1958-1961: Studied at the Central Agricultural and Forestry Vocational School in Hanoi.

- 1962-1963: Forestry worker, forest survey technician at the Bac Kan Forestry Department.

- July 5, 1963: Joined the Vietnam Labor Party.

- 1963-1965: Deputy Head of the Bach Thong Logging Team.

- 1965-1966: Studied Russian at the Hanoi Foreign Language School.

- 1966-1971: Student at the Leningrad Forestry Academy (Soviet Union).

- 1972-1973: Deputy Head of the Inspection Department of the Forestry Bureau of Bac Thai Province.

- 1973-1974: Director of Phu Luong Forestry Station, Bac Thai province.

- 1974-1976: Studied at the Nguyen Ai Quoc Advanced Party School.

- 1976-1980: Provincial Party Committee member, Deputy Director of the Forestry Department of Bac Thai province, concurrently Head of the Forestry Construction Company, then Head of the Forestry Department of Bac Thai province.

- 1980-1983: Provincial Party Committee member, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Bac Thai province.

- 1984 - October 1986: Deputy Secretary and Chairman of the People's Committee of Bac Thai Province.

- November 1986 - February 1989: Secretary of the Bac Thai Provincial Party Committee.

- December 1986: At the 6th Party Congress, he was elected as an alternate member of the Central Committee of the Party.

- March 1989: At the 6th Conference of the 6th Central Committee, he was elected as a full member of the Central Committee of the Party.

- August 1989: Head of the Central Committee's Ethnic Affairs Department.

- November 1989: Elected as an additional Member of the National Assembly, 8th term, and elected as Vice Chairman of the National Assembly's Ethnic Council.

- June 1991: At the 7th Party Congress, he was elected to the Central Committee of the Party and subsequently elected to the Politburo by the Central Committee.

- September 1992: Elected Chairman of the 9th National Assembly.

- June 1996: At the 8th Party Congress, he was elected to the Central Committee of the Party, and the Central Committee elected him to the Politburo.

- September 1997: Chairman of the 10th National Assembly.

- January 1998: Appointed to the Standing Committee of the Politburo.

- April 2001: At the 9th Party Congress, he was elected to the Central Committee of the Party, and subsequently elected by the Central Committee to the Politburo and as General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party. He was also a member of the 11th National Assembly (May 2002).

- April 2006: At the 10th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, he was re-elected to the Central Committee and the Politburo, and was elected General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party (until January 2011). He was also a member of the 12th National Assembly (until May 2011).

- September 29, 2023: Awarded the 60-Year Party Membership Badge.

- January 20, 2025: Awarded the Gold Star Order.
