Once a "rich" plant with income dozens of times higher than rice, the morning glory in Dai Hue commune (formerly Nam Dan district) is now facing the risk of shrinking its growing area due to consecutive crop failures. Many areas of plants have died young, and prices are unstable, forcing farmers to struggle to switch crops.
During the main season, people in Dai Hue commune take advantage of the early morning to harvest the morning glory flowers. However, this year, many flower trellises are sparse, and the yield has decreased sharply compared to previous years. Photo: TPAlthough still retaining its lush green color and characteristic fragrance, this year's morning glory flowers are small, sparsely bloomed, and of uneven quality, a result of prolonged, unusually cold rains. Photo: TP This year, the price of early season morning glory flowers was at one point up to 45,000 VND/kg, now it has dropped to only 25,000 - 30,000 VND/kg. Photo: TPThe morning glory flower crop failed, so traders could not buy enough. Many refrigerated trucks from the northern provinces came to collect the flowers, but the quantity was quite small, not enough to meet the demand. Photo: TPHaving been attached to this crop for decades, people cannot help but feel sad when seeing the flower trellis withered, the yield reduced to less than half of previous years. Photo: TPMany areas of jasmine flowers died right from the beginning of the season. Farmers said the cause was the prolonged cold, unseasonal rains and soil degradation after many years of monoculture. In addition, some types of fungi appeared, causing the plants to become infected. Photo: TPThe beds of soil are dry and cracked, the trellises are bare. “The plants are dying, wilting, and the flowers are sparse. Income has decreased to only 1/3 of that of previous years,” Ms. Nguyen Thi Tham shared. Photo: TPTo make use of the land and save money, many households have to intercrop hot peppers and herbs in their fields of passionflower. Photo: TPMany areas previously used to grow passionflowers have now been completely replaced by herbs. Photo: TPThe area of jasmine flowers in the whole commune has decreased sharply from 60 hectares in 2024 to 45 hectares now. Photo: TP Mr. Nguyen Huu Anh's household in Dai Hue commune reduced the area of growing passionflower from 5 sao to 2 sao, and he switched to growing other vegetables. Mr. Anh said: "I had to switch to bitter melon and sweet melon. However, the income cannot be equal to that of passionflower, and it is also more difficult to sell." Photo: TPThe fields, which were once lush with jasmine flowers, are now being converted to grow short-term vegetables. Photo: TPMeanwhile, on high land plots, the passionflower still grows well, produces many flowers and lasts a long time. Many households bring passionflower to plant on hill gardens, this is also a direction that the commune encourages to expand. Photo: TPAccording to Mr. Nguyen Thuc Quang - Head of the Economic Department of Dai Hue Commune, the commune is currently reviewing the planting area and planning accordingly. At the same time, combining soil improvement and crop rotation and introducing new, high-quality varieties of passionflower to replace them. Photo: TPClip: Thanh Phuc
