Once a "rich" plant with income dozens of times higher than rice, the morning glory in Dai Hue commune (formerly Nam Dan district) is now facing the risk of shrinking its growing area due to consecutive crop failures. Many areas of plants have died young, and prices are unstable, forcing farmers to struggle to switch crops.

The morning glory flower crop failed, so traders could not buy enough. Many refrigerated trucks from the northern provinces came to collect the flowers, but the quantity was quite small, not enough to meet the demand. Photo: TP

Having been attached to this crop for decades, people cannot help but feel sad when seeing the flower trellis withered, the yield reduced to less than half of previous years. Photo: TP

Many areas of jasmine flowers died right from the beginning of the season. Farmers said the cause was the prolonged cold, unseasonal rains and soil degradation after many years of monoculture. In addition, some types of fungi appeared, causing the plants to become infected. Photo: TP

Mr. Nguyen Huu Anh's household in Dai Hue commune reduced the area of growing passionflower from 5 sao to 2 sao, and he switched to growing other vegetables. Mr. Anh said: "I had to switch to bitter melon and sweet melon. However, the income cannot be equal to that of passionflower, and it is also more difficult to sell." Photo: TP

Meanwhile, on high land plots, the passionflower still grows well, produces many flowers and lasts a long time. Many households bring passionflower to plant on hill gardens, this is also a direction that the commune encourages to expand. Photo: TP
