Indonesia is currently one of the three largest pepper exporting countries in the world, behind only Vietnam and Brazil. With stable output and a wide market network, Indonesia is playing an important role in the global pepper supply chain.
On July 15, US President Donald Trump announced a bilateral trade agreement with Indonesia. Accordingly, the US will apply a 19% tariff on imported goods from Indonesia. Notably, goods exported from the US to Indonesia will not be subject to any tariff or non-tariff barriers.
With this 19% tax rate, Indonesia is considered to have a competitive advantage over some other pepper exporting countries. In particular, Brazil is facing the risk of being subject to a countervailing tax rate of up to 50%. This could help Indonesia increase its attractiveness to international importers in the coming time.
