On July 15th, US President Donald Trump announced a bilateral trade agreement with Indonesia. Under the agreement, the US will impose a 19% tariff on goods imported from Indonesia. Notably, goods exported from the US to Indonesia will not be subject to any tariff or non-tariff barriers.
With this 19% tariff, Indonesia is considered to have a competitive advantage over some other pepper exporting countries. In particular, Brazil is facing the risk of countervailing duties of up to 50%. This could help Indonesia increase its attractiveness to international importers in the future.
