World coffee prices on two major exchanges fell sharply at the end of the week. The main reason came from investors' expectations that the US Federal Reserve (Fed) would soon cut interest rates. This information was reinforced after the US Department of Labor announced that non-farm payrolls in August increased by only 22,000, significantly lower than the 75,000 forecast by experts.
Another factor affecting coffee prices is the development of trade policy. US President Donald Trump has filed an appeal to the Supreme Court to defend the reciprocal tax policy after an unfavorable decision from the appeals court. He warned that the US may have to cancel many trade agreements if it fails.
This situation raises the possibility that tariffs on coffee, especially from Brazil, could be reduced, helping to calm the market and cause coffee prices to fall in the short term.
