Myanmar's President resigns as chairman of the USDP party.
Myanmar President U Thein Sein has resigned as chairman of the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), and the position has been handed over to the party's vice chairman, Shwe Mann.
According to the USDP's Union Daily on May 2nd, Myanmar's 2008 Constitution stipulates that "if the president and vice presidents are members of a political party, they shall not participate in the activities of that party during their term in office from the date of their election."

The decision to transfer the chairmanship of the USDP to the party's First Vice-Chairman, Shwe Mann, was officially announced at the USDP Youth Congress on May 1st.
After relinquishing his rank as a military general, U Thein Sein founded the USDP in April 2010 to participate in the general election in November of the same year. In this election, the USDP won a majority of seats in parliament, becoming the ruling party, and U Thein Sein was elected to the Lower House.
In the March 2011 elections, U Thein Sein was elected President of Myanmar for a five-year term. On October 17, 2012, the USDP held its first party congress in Naypyidaw, but there were no major changes in the party leadership, except for the election of two additional Vice-Chairmen, bringing the total number of Vice-Chairmen to three.
Currently, there are 58 active political parties in Myanmar, with the USDP and the National League for Democracy being the two largest.
