Myanmar President U Thein Sein has resigned as Chairman of the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) and the position has been transferred to the party's Vice Chairman, Mr. Shwe Mann.

According to the USDP's Union Daily on May 2, the 2008 Myanmar Constitution stipulates that "if the president and vice presidents are members of a political party, they shall not participate in the activities of that party during their term of office from the date of election."

The decision to transfer the USDP Chairmanship to the party's First Vice Chairman Shwe Mann was officially announced at the USDP Youth Congress on May 1.

After resigning his rank as Army General, U Thein Sein founded the USDP in April 2010 to participate in the general election in November of the same year. In this general election, the USDP won the majority of seats in the parliament, becoming the ruling party and U Thein Sein was elected to the House of Representatives.

In the March 2011 election, U Thein Sein was elected President of Myanmar for a five-year term. On October 17, 2012, the USDP held its first party congress in Naypyidaw, but there were no major changes in the party leadership, except for the election of two more Vice Presidents, bringing the party's total to three.

Currently, there are 58 active political parties in Myanmar, of which the USDP and the National League for Democracy are the two largest parties./.
