Restore and sustainably develop raw material trees
Previously, Quy Chau had about 12,000 hectares of bamboo scattered across 8 communes, but due to indiscriminate exploitation, the bamboo area has decreased to about half; the remaining area is in a state of near-exhaustion due to lack of care and protection. Restoring and developing bamboo sustainably and turning it into a raw material tree that brings stable income to the people is an urgent requirement for Quy Chau.
(Baonghean) -Previously, Quy Chau had about 12,000 hectares of bamboo scattered across 8 communes, but due to indiscriminate exploitation, the bamboo area has decreased to about half; the remaining area is in a state of near-exhaustion due to lack of care and protection. Restoring and developing bamboo sustainably and turning it into a raw material tree that brings stable income to the people is an urgent requirement for Quy Chau.
With the attention of the Institute of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences of the Northern Mountainous Provinces, in 2011, a model of enclosure, protection of cycad trees called the Green Commercial Production Project was implemented in Xet 2 village, Chau Thang commune, Quy Chau district. The project's goal is to limit negative human impacts on the natural development of cycad trees and to care for and exploit cycads according to technical procedures. The project was implemented on 21 hectares, assigned to 11 households; in the first year, the project had 3 hectares assigned to 2 households in Xet 2 village (1.5 hectares/household); in the second year, the project expanded to 18 hectares for 8 households in 6 villages of Chau Thang commune.
It is worth noting that the amount of support when receiving the enclosure for raising the bamboo is not much (each household is supported with 2.4 million VND for clearing and clearing the ground and 600 kg of NPK fertilizer), but thanks to the guidance in the style of "holding hands and showing work", transferring care techniques right on the field, it has achieved high efficiency and is highly appreciated by the people.
Mr. Vang Anh Tuan, a commune agricultural and forestry officer, checks the technique of taking care of the linden trees.
Taking us to visit the model, although it is quite far from the village center and the travel conditions are difficult, but when witnessing the green and well-cared-for forest in Xet 2 village, the trees are growing plump, Mr. Vang Anh Tuan - an agricultural and forestry officer of Chau Thang commune, was excited: This model was implemented in the first year for 2 households, now it has been handed over to the people for management but we are very assured. Also in this forest area, more than 3 years ago, the trees were arbitrarily exploited leading to exhaustion and desolation, but now with the protection, cover and care of people, the trees have become green again.
Mr. Lu Van Ky (24 years old) in Xet 2 village is one of the first two households to receive the green commercial production project's zoning and care. He said that as a poor household, his family was given priority by the commune to receive the model the earliest. In the first year of implementation, the family focused on zoning and care, from the second year onwards, each year the family harvested 2-3 batches, each batch earning from 1 to 1.5 million VND. From the success of the care model according to the Project, his family also protected and protected an additional 2.8 hectares. According to Mr. Ky, zoning and care according to the Project's instructions not only brings income to the family, but also the important thing is to be more aware of zoning and protecting the linden trees. Although the linden forest lives and grows naturally, if it is exploited indiscriminately and haphazardly, it will be completely exhausted..."
It is known that protecting and caring for the linden tree is relatively easy. The linden tree mainly grows naturally, when caring for it, it is necessary to pay attention to the time of fertilizing and clearing the ground cover according to the correct technical process, the cost is also low because the linden tree is suitable for the soil conditions here, can grow intercropped with bamboo and is enclosed and cultivated in remote areas where land is abundant. Thanks to being cared for and protected, the linden tree in Chau Thang, Quy Chau has a high yield, on average each tree weighs 7 kg, some trees reach 10 kg, each bush has 20-30 trees. If cared for and exploited according to the correct process, each hectare of linden tree yields about 20 to 30 tons of fresh linden, equivalent to 8-12 million VND. Just need to restore and protect the existing linden area (nearly 6,000 hectares), each year Quy Chau harvests about 9,000 tons of fresh linden (equivalent to 3,000 tons of dry linden). With the current price of dried bamboo shoots at 25,000 VND/kg, the amount of over 75 billion VND/year is a significant source of income for people to reduce poverty and increase income...
From the model of protecting and caring for the bamboo of the Green Commercial Production Project, up to now, Chau Thang has had 700 hectares of bamboo interspersed in the forests that have been protected and nurtured by the people. According to many people, Quy Chau bamboo has an advantage that not all raw materials have, which is that in addition to the precious breed suitable for the land, the output is quite stable, the investment cost is not large, so it is suitable for the majority of people, especially poor households. When harvesting, people can sell fresh or dried and there are always people coming to the commune to buy. Currently, the bamboo area is small but the demand for bamboo to make bamboo and rattan materials and incense sticks is quite large every year. Quy Chau bamboo products are not only raw materials for the incense and bamboo and rattan weaving profession in the province, but are also very popular in the market of the northern provinces because the bamboo from Quy Chau forest is quite good, flexible and durable...
Mr. Tran Van Chuong - Chairman of Quy Chau District People's Committee said: Lung is one of the crop models that the district is encouraging people to enclose, grow and care for. In addition to the project of the Northern Mountainous Provinces Agricultural and Forestry Research Institute supporting the implementation in Chau Thang, the district is currently organizing a workshop to mobilize a number of non-governmental organizations to support investment in a number of forest trees, including Lung to expand to other communes. The district's desire is not only to become a raw material supply area, but also to attract handicrafts to the area so that Lung has the highest commodity value; thereby creating more jobs and income for local workers.
Lung (belonging to the bamboo family) is a species of tree that grows naturally in the mountainous region of Quy Chau, most concentrated in Chau Thang, Chau Phong... For a long time, Lung has been used as incense sticks to produce agarwood and is a very good material for rattan and bamboo weaving for export. |
