The commercial Quy duck farming model has changed the way of thinking and doing in livestock farming of farmers in Binh Chuan commune, Con Cuong district.

In previous years, Mr. Vi Van Ngoc's family in Xieng village, Binh Chuan commune used to raise Quy ducks three times a year, each time 30 ducks. However, due to lack of investment funds, Mr. Ngoc's family still raised them in the traditional way. The ducks were allowed to roam freely and were rarely vaccinated against diseases, leading to a situation where they had some success and some failure. However, in 2024, his family's method of raising Quy ducks has changed, giving better results.

Mr. Vi Van Ngoc said: "In May 2024, my family was one of 60 households supported by the People's Committee of the commune with more than 100 Quy ducklings, only 10 days old. Along with the support for the breed, the family was also trained by commune and district officials in applying techniques for care, breeding, disease prevention, and advice on choosing breeds... From the newly acquired knowledge, the family has changed the old farming method, applying science and technology to help the duck flock grow quickly. Up to now, after nearly 6 months of raising and caring, the duck flock is growing well. Each duck weighs from 2.5-3 kg. The duck flock is preparing to lay eggs. At this time, the price of commercial ducks is from 80,000-90,000 VND/kg and eggs are 3,000 VND/egg. Raising Quy ducklings promises to bring a fairly high income."

The family of Mr. Kha Van Tinh in Na Co village, Binh Chuan commune is also one of the households supported to implement the Quy duck farming model. Mr. Kha Van Tinh shared: "My family received support from the State to raise more than 100 ducklings. The family has taken advantage of the available agricultural by-products for raising, so the flock of ducks has grown rapidly. After more than 5 months of care, the flock of ducks has grown well, with a high survival rate, each currently weighing about 3 kg. With the support and encouragement of the commune and district, the family plans to raise egg-laying ducks and hatch them for sale to the market. This is the source of income that will help the family escape poverty in 2024."

Quy duck is a native duck breed in Binh Chuan commune, Con Cuong district, with good reproductive ability; delicious meat and eggs, high nutritional value. Previously, people in the districtCon CuongPeople often raise this type of duck, but because the farming practices of the people are still fragmented, small-scale, self-sufficient, and vaccination does not follow recommendations, the effectiveness is not high.

In order to preserve the commercial duck breed and transfer effective duck farming methods to farming households, towards promoting household economy as well as local economy, in April 2024, Binh Chuan commune deployed and developed a poverty reduction model of commercial duck farming from the capital source of the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction.

Specifically, Binh Chuan commune has selected and provided 6,500 ducklings to 60 poor and near-poor households in the locality. When participating in the model, these 60 households, in addition to being supported with ducklings, food, and veterinary medicine, are also trained in care techniques, barn construction, disinfection, and disease prevention measures for ducks in a biosafety-oriented manner.

Mr. Pham Xuan Manh - Chairman of Binh Chuan Commune People's Committee said: Initial results show that this is a highly effective model, suitable for local conditions (many streams; people have free time; not too demanding on techniques). The Quy duck farming model is helping families escape poverty and become rich. More importantly, the model has inspired and expanded the change from small-scale, fragmented farming to concentrated, large-scale farming with investment in economics, techniques, and commercial farming for people.

Ms. Lo Thi Tam - officer of the District Department of Agriculture and Rural DevelopmentCon Cuongexchange: "Through model evaluation, we found that the survival rate of ducks reached 95%; the average weight reached 2.2 kg/duck. The Quy duck breed is very popular in the market. With a selling price of 80,000-90,000 VND/kg, each household on average made a profit of nearly 30 million VND...

From the success of the Quy duck farming model for sale in Binh Chuan commune, in the coming time, we will continue to replicate the model to other localities to maintain, preserve and develop local duck breeds, bringing high income to people"./.
