SUMMARY OF WORK EXPERIENCE
- 1936: Joined the Popular Front movement
- 1937: Joined the Hon Gai Miners' Mutual Aid Organization
- 1938: He returned to his hometown to work, joined the Workers' Union, and campaigned for support of the Soviet Union.
- June 1939: Admitted to the Indochinese Communist Party (now the Communist Party of Vietnam)
- 1941: Captured by the enemy and sentenced to 10 years in prison, incarcerated at Ha Dong Prison and Hoa Lo Prison in Hanoi.
- March 1945: Escaped from prison and continued revolutionary activities, joining the Ha Dong Provincial Party Committee and directly leading the General Uprising to seize power in Ha Dong.
- After the August 1945 Revolution: Held the position of Secretary of the Ha Dong Provincial Party Committee
- 1946: Secretary of the Ha Nam Provincial Party Committee, Secretary of the Nam Dinh Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the Nam Dinh Provincial Resistance Committee.
- 1947-1949: Member of the Regional Party Committee of Region III, Secretary of the Ninh Binh Provincial Party Committee, Secretary of the Hoa Binh Provincial Party Committee
- 1950: Deputy Secretary of the Inter-Regional Party Committee, concurrently Vice Chairman of the Inter-Regional III Resistance and Administrative Committee, Political Commissar and Commander of Inter-Region III
- 1951-1954: Secretary of the Party Committee of the Left Bank of the Red River, concurrently Chairman of the Resistance Administrative Committee and Political Commissar of the Left Bank of the Red River Military Region
- 1955: Held the position of Secretary of the City Party Committee and Chairman of the Military-Political Committee of Hai Phong City.
- March 1955: Appointed as an alternate member of the Central Executive Committee of the Party, 2nd term.

- 1960: At the Third Party Congress, he was elected a member of the Central Committee of the Party and held the position of Minister of Internal Trade.
- 1967-1968: Chairman of the State Price Committee, Head of the Government Inspection Delegation
- 1969-1973: Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the State Committee for Basic Construction
- 1973: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Construction, Vice Chairman of the Central Frontline Support Council and the Anti-Blockade Council for Hai Phong Port.
- December 1976: At the 4th Party Congress, he was re-elected as a member of the Central Committee of the Party and was elected by the Central Committee as an alternate member of the Politburo, holding the position of Deputy Prime Minister, in charge of the following sectors: basic construction, industry, materials, industrial and commercial reform, and distribution and circulation.
- March 1982: At the 5th Party Congress, he was re-elected as a member of the Central Committee and subsequently elected to the Politburo by the Central Committee, holding the position of Deputy Prime Minister, in charge of the following sectors: basic construction, industry, and supplies.
- December 1986: At the 6th Party Congress, he was re-elected as a member of the Central Committee and was elected by the Central Committee to the Politburo, and assigned to serve as the Standing Secretary of the Central Committee.
- June 1988: He was elected Chairman of the Council of Ministers (now the Prime Minister) by the National Assembly.
- June 1991: At the 7th National Congress of the Party, he was re-elected as a member of the Central Committee and was subsequently elected by the Central Committee to the Politburo, holding the position of General Secretary of the Central Committee; Secretary of the Central Military Commission.
- June 1996: At the 8th Party Congress, he was re-elected as a member of the Central Committee of the Party and was elected by the Central Committee to the Politburo, holding the position of General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party; Secretary of the Central Military Commission.
- December 1997: At the Fourth Plenum of the Eighth Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, he requested to resign from the Central Committee and relinquish his position as General Secretary; he was then honored by the Central Committee as an Advisor to the Central Committee until 2000.
- October 1, 2018: Comrade passed away.
