SUMMARY OF WORK EXPERIENCE
- 1936: Participated in the Popular Front movement
- 1937: Joined the Hon Gai Miners' Friendship Organization
- 1938: He returned to his hometown to work, joined the Trade Union, and campaigned to support the Soviet Union.
- June 1939: Admitted to the Indochinese Communist Party (now the Communist Party of Vietnam)
- 1941: Captured by the enemy and sentenced to 10 years in prison, imprisoned at Ha Dong Prison and Hoa Lo Prison - Hanoi
- March 1945: Escaped from prison to continue revolutionary activities, joined the Ha Dong Provincial Party Committee, directly led the General Uprising to seize power in Ha Dong.
- After the August Revolution 1945: Held the position of Secretary of the Ha Dong Provincial Party Committee
- 1946: Secretary of Ha Nam Provincial Party Committee, Secretary of Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of Nam Dinh Provincial Resistance Committee
- 1947-1949: Member of Zone III Party Committee, Secretary of Ninh Binh Provincial Party Committee, Secretary of Hoa Binh Provincial Party Committee
- 1950: Deputy Secretary of the Inter-Zone Party Committee, Vice Chairman of the Administrative Resistance Committee of Inter-Zone III, Political Commissar and Commander of Inter-Zone III
- 1951-1954: Secretary of the Red River Left Bank Regional Party Committee, concurrently Chairman of the Administrative Resistance Committee and Political Commissar of the Red River Left Bank Military Region
- 1955: Held the position of Secretary of the City Party Committee and Chairman of the Military and Political Committee of Hai Phong City.

- 1969-1973: Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the State Basic Construction Committee
- 1973: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Construction, Vice Chairman of the Central Front Support Council and the Anti-blockade of Hai Phong Port
- December 1976: At the 4th Party Congress, he was re-elected as a member of the Party Central Committee and was elected by the Party Central Committee as an alternate member of the Politburo, holding the position of Deputy Prime Minister, in charge of the following sectors: Basic Construction, Industry, Materials, Industrial and Commercial Renovation and Distribution and Circulation.
- March 1982: At the 5th Party Congress, he was re-elected as a member of the Party Central Committee and was elected by the Party Central Committee to the Politburo, holding the position of Deputy Prime Minister, in charge of the following sectors: Basic Construction, Industry, and Materials.
- December 1986: At the 6th Party Congress, he was re-elected as a member of the Party Central Committee and was elected by the Party Central Committee to the Politburo, and assigned to be the Standing Member of the Party Central Committee Secretariat.
- June 1988: He was elected by the National Assembly as Chairman of the Council of Ministers (now Prime Minister)
- June 1991: At the 7th National Congress of the Party, he continued to be elected as a member of the Party Central Committee and was elected by the Party Central Committee to the Politburo and held the position of General Secretary of the Party Central Committee; Secretary of the Central Military Commission.
- June 1996: At the 8th Party Congress, he continued to be elected as a member of the Party Central Committee and was elected by the Party Central Committee to the Politburo and held the position of General Secretary of the Party Central Committee; Secretary of the Central Military Commission.
- December 1997: At the 4th Conference of the Party Central Committee, 8th term, he asked to resign from the Party Central Committee and the position of General Secretary; he was honored by the Party Central Committee as Advisor to the Party Central Committee until 2000.
- October 1, 2018: Comrade passed away.
