Oil prices continued their upward trend at the end of the trading week. Brent crude was at $67.40 a barrel and WTI crude was trading around $63.49 a barrel. Although lower than the previous session, prices were still higher than at the beginning of the week, helping the market close its second consecutive week of gains.
The US Federal Reserve’s 0.25 percentage point interest rate cut could have supported oil prices. However, as the market had anticipated the decision, the impact was limited. Other factors, especially supply and demand, continued to dominate.
The latest report from the US Department of Energy showed a larger-than-expected increase in distillate inventories, raising concerns about weakening demand in the world’s largest oil-consuming economy. Although inventories have remained below seasonal averages for most of the year, the news has put pressure on oil prices.
The Ukrainian military continued to attack two Russian oil refineries, but the move did not cause a sharp change in international prices. The reason came from the statement of US President Donald Trump, who said that he preferred to keep oil prices low rather than impose more sanctions on Russia. This comment helped the market to reduce the risk of supply disruption.
Last week, pipeline operator Transneft also denied that the attacks could lead to production cuts. The company said it had no plans to limit production and accused some Western news outlets of deliberately spreading negative stories amid the information tension.
