Oil prices today, September 21, 2025: Second consecutive week of increases.
At the close of trading, oil prices maintained their upward trend. Brent crude was at $67.40 per barrel and WTI crude traded around $63.49 per barrel. Although lower than the previous session, prices were still higher than at the beginning of the week, helping the market close out its second consecutive week of gains.
The Federal Reserve's 0.25 percentage point interest rate cut should have supported oil prices. However, as the market had anticipated this, the impact was limited. Other factors, particularly supply and demand, continued to be the dominant drivers.
The latest report from the U.S. Department of Energy indicates that inventories of refined products have risen more sharply than expected, raising concerns about weakening demand in the world's largest oil-consuming economy. Although inventories have remained below the seasonal average for most of the year, this information has put pressure on oil prices.
Ukrainian troops continued their attacks on two Russian oil refineries, but this move did not cause significant fluctuations in international prices. This was due to statements from US President Donald Trump, who indicated that he prioritized keeping oil prices low rather than imposing further sanctions on Russia. This assessment helped alleviate market concerns about potential supply disruptions.
Last week, the pipeline operator Transneft also denied reports that the attacks could lead to production cuts. The company asserted that it had no plans to restrict production and accused some Western news outlets of deliberately publishing negative information amid heightened information tensions.
