Crimea has caused friction between the US and Ukraine.

The United States proposed that Kyiv cede territories liberated by the Russian military without any security guarantees or NATO membership. Accordingly, the US suggested not approving Ukraine's NATO membership and recognizing Crimea as belonging to Russia. This was unacceptable to Kyiv.
