Top 10 most visited destinations in the world in 2016

Bangkok, Thailand topped the list of most attractive tourist destinations in 2016 with an expected 21.4 million visitors, beating other strong contenders such as Dubai and London.

According to the annual ranking released on September 22nd by Mastercard (a global technology and payments company), Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, surpassed London (UK) to take the top spot in the ranking of the most attractive tourist destinations for 2016. Mastercard ranked 10 cities based on a list of 132 popular destinations worldwide, according to Reuters.

Yuwa Hedrick-Wong, an economist at Mastercard, believes everything in Bangkok is worth the money, especially for tourists from high-income countries. However, some tourists also argue that pollution in Thailand makes it less than ideal for a long stay, despite the delicious food.

Thailand is expected to welcome a record 33 million tourists this year, thanks to a surge in Chinese visitors. Bangkok alone is projected to receive 21.47 million international visitors in 2016.
