10 safest SUVs of 2016
Of the 10 safest SUVs, Japanese models account for 8, including the Honda Pilot, Honda CR-V, and Toyota RAV4.
The SUV segment is gradually replacing sedans as the best-selling vehicle type in most markets. The strength of SUVs today lies in their ability to meet basic daily transportation needs, while also outperforming sedans in terms of off-road capability and cargo capacity.
To select the 10 safest SUVs, Autoevolution surveyed the 2016 versions of all models in the segment currently sold in the US market. The first criterion was the 5-star rating from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), followed by the rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
Accordingly, the 10 safest SUVs in the US in 2016 are listed below, in alphabetical order.
