Top 10 provinces and cities with the highest car sales in Vietnam.
Despite a decline in car sales in Vietnam, Nghe An, along with the two largest cities in the country, continued to lead in new car sales in 2023.
After a period of strong growth with over half a million cars sold in 2022, the Vietnamese automotive market faced a series of difficulties in 2023, leading to a significant decrease in purchasing power. Sales of most car manufacturers operating in Vietnam plummeted.
According to sales figures released by the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), in 2023, sales of all types of automobiles by VAMA members totaled 301,989 vehicles, a decrease of 102,646 vehicles, or 25%, compared to 2022. Similar to previous years, the majority of new cars sold in the Vietnamese market were in the passenger car segment. However, passenger car sales decreased by 27%, commercial vehicle sales by 26%, and especially specialized vehicle sales by as much as 56% compared to 2022.
Meanwhile, the latest data from the Vietnam Registering Agency shows that in 2023, the number of passenger cars with 9 seats or fewer, purchased by customers and registered for the first time, reached 296,745 units. This figure includes domestically manufactured and assembled vehicles, officially imported vehicles, and unofficially imported vehicles.
Among provinces and cities nationwide, Hanoi continues to lead in car sales with 46,330 vehicles. This is considered the largest car market in the country in 2023. Ho Chi Minh City ranks second with 39,132 vehicles sold. Notably, Nghe An continues to rank third nationwide in car sales, with its residents purchasing a total of 10,304 vehicles in 2023.
Dong Nai ranked 4th with 10,080 vehicles, while Thanh Hoa came in 5th with 9,885 vehicles. Additionally, the top 10 provinces and cities with the highest car sales in Vietnam also included Binh Duong (8,967 vehicles), Hai Phong (8,631 vehicles), Bac Ninh (6,934 vehicles), Da Nang (6,845 vehicles), and Quang Ninh (6,694 vehicles).
The provinces that purchased the fewest cars in Vietnam in 2023 all sold fewer than 1,000 vehicles per year, including: Lai Chau (535 vehicles), Bac Kan (550 vehicles), Cao Bang (716 vehicles), Dien Bien (725 vehicles), Ha Giang (820 vehicles), Kon Tum (864 vehicles), and Bac Lieu (958 vehicles).
