Car purchasing power in Vietnam has decreased, Nghe An and the two largest cities in the country will continue to lead in new car consumption in 2023.

After a period of strong growth with more than half a million cars sold in 2022, the Vietnamese auto market is facing a series of difficulties in 2023, causing purchasing power to decrease significantly. Sales of most car manufacturers and businesses in Vietnam have "plummeted".

According to sales data released by the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), in 2023, the total sales of all types of cars of VAMA members reached 301,989 cars of all types, down 102,646 cars, equivalent to 25% compared to 2022. Similar to previous years, the number of new cars sold in the Vietnamese market is mainly concentrated in the passenger car segment. However, sales of passenger cars last year decreased by 27%, commercial vehicles decreased by 26%, and specialized vehicles in particular decreased by 56% compared to 2022.

Meanwhile, the latest data from the Vietnam Register shows that in 2023, the number of cars with 9 seats or less, purchased by customers and registered for the first time, reached 296,745 units. This figure includes domestically assembled cars, genuine imported cars, and unofficial imported cars...

Among the provinces and cities across the country, Hanoi continues to be the leading locality in terms of car consumption with 46,330 vehicles. This is considered the largest car market in the country in 2023. Ho Chi Minh City ranked 2nd with the consumption of 39,132 cars of all kinds. Notably, Nghe An continued to rank 3rd in the country in terms of car consumption, Nghe An people purchased a total of 10,304 cars in 2023.

Dong Nai ranked 4th with 10,080 cars, 5th place belonged to Thanh Hoa with 9,885 cars. In addition, in the top 10 provinces and cities with the highest car consumption in Vietnam, there are also Binh Duong (8,967 cars), Hai Phong (8,631 cars), Bac Ninh (6,934 cars), Da Nang (6,845 cars), Quang Ninh (6,694 cars).

The provinces that bought the fewest cars in Vietnam in 2023 all consumed less than 1,000 cars/year, including: Lai Chau (535 cars), Bac Kan (550 cars), Cao Bang (716 cars), Dien Bien (725 cars), Ha Giang (820 cars), Kon Tum (864 cars), Bac Lieu (958 cars).
