The 2005 robbery of the Central Bank of Brazil's Fortaleza branch is one of the largest bank robberies of all time, and is also considered one of the most elaborate. The robbery was the result of a meticulous plan carried out by a small gang who dug a 100-meter-long tunnel to the bank's vault from a nearby location.

A building materials store was used as a cover so that they could move a large amount of earth and rock without arousing any suspicion. The tunnel was built very elaborately and fully equipped. The criminals not only dug the tunnel but also installed electricity and air conditioning systems underneath to serve the "mission" of theft.

After three months of digging, the criminals finally broke into the vault and stole the equivalent of $70 million. Police arrested several suspects and recovered about $9 million, but most of the suspects remain at large.

The biggest jewel heist in British history took place at the Graff Diamond Centre in August 2009. Two thieves, posing as customers, stole a large amount of jewelry and precious stones worth nearly 65 million USD.

The two men used guns to threaten Graff employees. They did not hide their faces from security cameras. Police later discovered that they used professional makeup techniques to change their hair, skin color, and facial and body features.

The thieves hid the stolen goods in the BMW and then changed cars twice, but they foolishly left their mobile phones in the car. This gave the police a clue. Ten suspects were arrested, but a lot of the gems and jewelry were lost.

In December 2004, the Northern Bank robbery was carried out by a group of people and became one of the biggest bank robberies in British history.

The night before the murders, two groups of armed men posing as police officers broke into the homes of two bank officials. They held the families hostage at gunpoint. The next day, the bank officials went to work as usual, but under the supervision of the robbers, they were forced to assist the robbers in breaking into the bank.

Nine million dollars in cash was stolen and the hostage families were released shortly afterwards. With only one robber in custody, the investigation continues and the case is far from closed.

Diamond traders store their precious stones in 160 vaults at the Antwerp Diamond Center in Belgium.

In February 2013, 123 of the 160 diamond vaults were emptied by four thieves. The stolen diamonds were worth up to $100 million.

It took police two years to find a clue. The criminals rented an office in the building that housed the Antwerp Diamond Center to study the alarm system and find a way to bypass it.

They successfully stole and copied the keys to the warehouses. On the day they broke in, they disabled all the security cameras.

Antwerp police later caught them, but the $100 million worth of diamonds and gems was never recovered.

This is considered one of the biggest robberies in British history with the amount of money stolen up to 300 million USD. The robbery took place at Sumitomo Bank in London in September 2007.

In this case, the robbers made silly mistakes during the transfer process due to their lack of familiarity with the SWIFT system when making international money transfers.

After 23 unsuccessful attempts over two days, the identity of the robbers was revealed. They were two Belgian men and a bank security chief.

Kevin O'Donoghye, 34, head of security at Sumitomo Bank in London, later explained that he agreed to the robbery because his family was under threat.

10. Bank of Baghdad, Iraq (2007)

This is still considered one of the most mysterious bank robberies ever. The robbery took place in 2007 at a bank in Baghdad, Iraq. 3 bank guards colluded to hire Iraqi militants to help them carry out this heist.

Because they knew the location of the money and the security situation, they easily "stole" 282 million dollars.

The strange thing is that all the money in the bank is in US dollars. After the brazen robbery, perhaps this bank will have to tighten its employee profile review process./.
