Farmers in hamlet 1, Lang Thanh commune, Yen Thanh district sow rice for the 2016 - 2017 spring crop. |
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa, a farmer in Hamlet 1, Lang Thanh Commune, Yen Thanh District, said: Her family will plant 4 sao of rice in the upcoming spring crop. On December 25, she finished sowing rice seedlings and covering them with plastic, while sprinkling ash on the seedlings. The family bought plastic from the commune's Agricultural Cooperative at a price of 30,000 VND/kg. With 4 sao of rice, she spent 40,000 VND on plastic.
Covering the seedlings with plastic takes time and costs more, but it is safe in cold weather and prevents insects and mice from getting in. When the seedlings have grown well, the plastic can be removed so that the seedlings can absorb light well.

Wherever the rice seedlings are sown, people cover them with plastic. |
Mr. Dao Chinh Son - Head of Hamlet 1, Lang Thanh Commune said: Following the direction of the Commune People's Committee, before sowing rice seedlings, the hamlet held a meeting to deploy spring crop production, in which it was thoroughly instructed that households must cover the rice seedlings with plastic. Therefore, in the entire concentrated rice seedling area of the hamlet, 100% of the rice seedlings area was carefully covered with plastic.
Yen Thanh district has about 400 hectares of seedlings to plant for about 12,700 hectares of rice in the upcoming spring crop. To ensure good growth of seedlings, the district People's Committee assigned specialized departments to direct localities to step up propaganda for farmers to sow seedlings on schedule and cover 100% of the seedlings with plastic. However, in some localities: Lang Thanh, Phuc Thanh, Hau Thanh, Nam Thanh... farmers have sown seedlings 7-10 days ahead of schedule (Yen Thanh's sowing schedule starts from January 1, 2017).

Thanh Phong Commune, Thanh Chuong District has many areas that are often flooded, so farmers prepare the land for planting earlier than the district's crop schedule. |
In Do Luong and Dien Chau districts at the end of December, many farmers have started sowing spring rice seedlings.
Mr. Tran Doan Hung - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Do Luong district said: The district's sowing schedule is from January 5 to 10, 2017, but some communes in low-lying areas have to plant old rice seedlings, so people sowed rice seedlings a few days before the district's schedule. However, the district directed localities to instruct people to cover the seedlings with plastic.
According to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, the spring rice sowing schedule of the province is from January 5 to 10, 2017. In order to protect the rice seedlings from the cold and limit pests and rodents, the Department directs localities to strictly implement the schedule and cover 100% of the rice seedlings with plastic.
However, due to the characteristics of some localities that cultivate low-lying areas, farmers have started sowing rice seedlings earlier than the crop schedule, such as: Dien Chau, Do Luong, Thanh Chuong, Yen Thanh, Hung Nguyen... farmers have invested in buying plastic to cover the entire sown rice seedlings area./.
