On the morning of August 10th, the Provincial People's Court opened a criminal trial for the murder case against Vi Văn Sinh (born in 1987), residing in Châu Nga commune, Quỳ Châu district.
According to the indictment, at approximately 11:45 PM on March 3, 2016, a conflict arose between Vi Van Sinh, Lu Van Phuc, and Vi Van Dong while they were at the home of Ms. Ha Thi Xuan. Dong was Xuan's ex-husband; they had only held a traditional ceremony and had not officially registered their marriage.

Earlier, Dong had slashed Sinh's motorbike with a knife. When Sinh said goodbye to everyone to leave, Phuc returned with Dong, who was holding a sword. Seeing this, Sinh ran into Ms. Xuan's house, went to the kitchen to get two pieces of firewood, and ran out to the yard. At this time, Sinh came out and saw Phuc bending down to get something from under the motorbike. Sinh used the firewood to hit Phuc hard on the head. Dong chased after Sinh with the sword, but Sinh ran away. With the intervention of Ms. Xuan's family, Dong returned and took Phuc to the hospital. Due to a fractured skull and brain hemorrhage, Lu Van Phuc died two days later.
Vi Van Sinh was arrested and prosecuted for murder.
At the trial, Vi Van Sinh admitted his crime. Sinh stated that when he saw Dong entering with a sword, and then saw Phuc bending down, he suspected Phuc was taking a weapon and, in a panic, struck Phuc, not expecting the blow to cause the victim's death. Vi Van Sinh hoped for leniency from the law so that he could be released from prison soon, rebuild his life, and earn money to compensate the victim's family. After Phuc's death, Sinh's family brought 9 million dong and a calf (worth 10 million dong) for the victim's family to offer as a sacrifice according to local customs.
After a comprehensive review of the case, the court sentenced Vi Van Sinh to 12 years in prison for murder and ordered him to pay compensation of over 77 million VND to the family of the victim, Lu Van Phuc.
