According to the indictment, both Niem and Liem went to China to get married. While living in China, Niem learned that the demand for Vietnamese women among men there was very high, so he came up with the idea of returning to Vietnam to find someone to trick and sell them to China.
In October 2016, when he returned to Vietnam, Niem used social networks to make friends and get to know young girls in the village.
After investigating, knowing that XTM (born in 2001) residing in Huu Kiem commune, Ky Son district, was looking for a job to support her family, Niem immediately offered sweet bait that she would take her to China to work in a teddy bear and clothing factory, where she would provide daily meals and accommodation and a monthly salary of 10 million VND. With Niem's lucrative promise, XTM immediately accepted the offer.
Niem called his sister, Hung Thi Liem, to come back to Vietnam to pick up M. and take her to China. Liem received 10 million VND as a salary. When they arrived, M. was sold to a man older than her father as a husband.
After selling M, Niem received 180 million VND. Niem sent M's grandmother 20 million VND and paid her sister 10 million VND.
On December 21, 2018, M was successfully rescued by the authorities and brought back to Vietnam. After returning home, M. filed a complaint against Hung Thi Niem and her siblings with the police.
At the trial, the two defendants admitted their crimes and asked the victim's family for forgiveness.
Based on aggravating and mitigating circumstances for the two defendants, the People's Court sentenced defendant Hung Thi Niem to 7 years in prison and Hung Thi Liem to 5 years in prison.
