According to information from local authorities, on the afternoon of May 15, two children, Hoang Phi Bao (7 years old), residing in Nam Linh commune, and Nguyen Huu Nam (7 years old), residing in Nam Xuan commune, Nam Dan district, invited each other to go fishing at Khe Dinh dam in hamlet 8, Nam Xuan commune.

At dinner, Bao and Nam were not seen, so the family members were shocked and went to look for them. When they reached Khe Dinh dam, they did not see them, only saw 2 pairs of sandals, shirts, hats, fishing rods and a basket of fish on the dam shore. Thinking that they had drowned, they organized a dive to search for them. Immediately after, Hoang Phi Bao's body was found, sunk a few dozen meters from the shore.

The search for Nguyen Huu Nam took place overnight. Relatives and people in the commune used nets to carefully sweep the dam surface. At 10 p.m. the same day, Nam's body was discovered submerged about 100 meters from the shore.

It is known that Bao and Nam are both in first grade, are cousins, grandchildren of Mr. Nguyen Huu Loc, residing in Hamlet 8, Nam Xuan Commune (Nam Dan). On May 15, they followed their parents to his house to prepare for the death anniversary of their grandmother when the accident happened.
