A Turkish businessman who flew with Emirates from Dubai (Middle East) to Hong Kong on May 1st is likely the biggest victim of recent thefts, according to Hong Kong police.
Immediately after landing at Hong Kong International Airport, 39-year-old Mustasa Saci discovered that "US$200,000 and two valuable watches, a Rolex and a Patek Philippe (total value equivalent to HK$2 million), which he had kept in his overhead luggage bag, had disappeared."
After realizing what had happened, he sought help from airport security to report it to the police.
The police have taken up the case and are investigating it as a formal theft. To date, no arrests have been made.
Another source explains why such a large sum of money placed in carry-on luggage could be so easily stolen in front of everyone.
They claim that criminals now dress elegantly, posing as airline passengers, and when passengers are distracted, they steal items from the overhead luggage compartments.
"They would stalk their 'prey' before takeoff, placing their luggage in the same overhead compartment as the victim. While the victim was asleep or using the restroom, they would pretend to search through their own luggage, simultaneously rummaging through and stealing the victim's belongings."
The brazen thefts that used to occur on short flights are now happening on long flights as well.
