A Turkish businessman who took an Emirates flight from Dubai to Hong Kong on May 1 was perhaps the worst victim of the recent thefts, according to Hong Kong police.
Immediately after landing at Hong Kong International Airport, 39-year-old Mustasa Saci discovered that "200,000 USD and 2 valuable Rolex and Patek Philippe watches (total value equivalent to 2 million Hong Kong dollars) that he had brought with him in his bag placed in the overhead luggage compartment had disappeared".
After discovering the incident, he sought help from airport security staff to report to the police.
The police have taken over the case and are investigating it as a formal theft. No arrests have been made so far.
There are other sources that explain why large sums of money placed in carry-on luggage can be easily stolen in full view of everyone.
They believe that criminals now dress up in fancy clothes and pretend to be passengers on planes, and when passengers are not paying attention, they will "steal things" from the carry-on luggage area above the passengers' heads.
“They monitor their ‘prey’ before take-off, placing their luggage in the same compartment as the victim. When the victim falls asleep or goes to the toilet, they pretend to search their luggage, and at the same time, they check and steal the victim’s luggage.”
Brazen thefts used to happen on short-haul flights, but now they're happening on long-haul flights too.
