Reports indicate that from February 5th, the start of massive protests against the military government, to March 21st, 250 people were killed in clashes between protesters and police and military forces. On March 20th, that number was 247.
According to information posted on APPZ's Facebook account, which publishes daily statistics on those arrested and killed in clashes with the military and police, the total number of arrests as of March 21st was 2,665, compared to 2,345 on March 20th. The association notes that this figure only reflects the number of people officially arrested and charged, not the true number; the actual total number of arrests during the protests is likely much higher.
Massive protests against the military government continue in many cities across Myanmar. The army and police are using water cannons, tear gas, rubber bullets, and even military-grade firearms to disperse the demonstrators. The protesters have erected barricades, taking cover behind them to retaliate by firing slingshots and homemade sports bows and arrows at the police.
On February 1st, a military coup took place in Myanmar, transferring power to the Commander-in-Chief of the Myanmar Armed Forces, General Min Aung Hlaing. President Win Myint and State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi were arrested. This move followed days of escalating tensions between the government and the military, which refused to recognize the results of the November elections. The coup organizers declared a one-year state of emergency in Myanmar.
