37 people fell into the trap of a 'lady' selling cheap cars
Hoa said she had a source to buy cheap scooters, lured dozens of people to buy them, and then embezzled more than 35 billion VND.
On November 15, Tran Thi Quynh Hoa (51 years old) had her appeal rejected by the High People's Court in Ho Chi Minh City, maintaining her original life sentence for fraud and appropriation of property.
According to the first instance verdict, around the end of 2006, Hoa needed money to spend and pay off her house loan, so she came up with the idea of fraud. She told her family and friends that she could buy a motorbike cheaper than the market price, and that anyone in need could buy it for them.
To gain trust, Hoa spent money to buy cars at stores and delivered them to customers for 2-10 million VND cheaper.

Many people ordered cars from Hoa in large quantities, or recommended them to relatives and friends. After receiving their money, Hoa delayed the delivery of the cars, using the money to pay off debts. In addition, the "lady" also invited many people to invest in real estate but then appropriated it.
Authorities determined that 37 people were defrauded of 35 billion VND by her.
A few years ago, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court held its first trial and sentenced Hoa to life in prison. This sentence was later overturned because of signs of negligence - when the victims claimed that Hoa’s daughter was also involved. However, the investigation did not find any basis for her knowing about her mother’s fraud.
In April, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court upheld the original verdict at the second instance trial. Hoa appealed for a reduced sentence.
