Here are some methods to help drivers have safer and more confident journeys when traveling at high speeds on the highway.

In recent years, Asia has witnessed remarkable economic growth, leading to rapid development of infrastructure across the region. This also means that drivers accustomed to congested roads now have the opportunity to drive at higher speeds on newly constructed highways.

However, driver training has not kept pace with the changes taking place, and many drivers still haven't fully mastered their vehicles on the highway.

Here are some methods to help drivers have safer and more confident journeys when traveling at high speeds on the highway.

Comply with speed limits.

Speed limits on highways are generally higher than in cities and rural areas. For example, in Vietnam, the speed limit on highways is up to 120 km/h, while the speed limit in cities ranges from 50 to 60 km/h. This is not simply a speed limit to avoid being fined, but also a basis for driving at a speed appropriate to traffic flow and enhancing road safety.

Maintain a safe distance.

When following another vehicle, maintain a safe distance and apply the "two-second rule" at speeds below 60km/h and the "three-second rule" at speeds above 60km/h or when traveling on highways.

If the vehicle in front passes an object (such as a tree), you should wait 2-3 seconds before passing it. Modern vehicles are equipped with advanced technologies such as Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Stability Control (ESP) which can assist in emergency braking and steering situations.

However, we should still maintain a reasonable distance to give ourselves time and space to react. You can also take advantage of driver-assistance technology (DAT) features such as: Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) helps maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front when driving on highways.

Focus your observation.

Keep your eyes as far ahead as possible to be aware of everything happening – this rule is especially true when driving long distances on highways. If your visibility is obstructed by bad weather or a large vehicle ahead, such as a truck or bus, you should maintain an even greater distance than usual. The three-second rule should be increased to four to five seconds in these cases; at a minimum, you should be able to see what's happening in front of the vehicle directly in front of you.

Move cautiously.

Overtaking other vehicles is unavoidable on highways, but you must strictly adhere to "no overtaking" signs to ensure safe driving. In right-hand drive countries like Vietnam, vehicles travel in the right lane and overtake on the left. When overtaking, remember these three steps: "Check your mirrors, signal, and proceed." First, check your mirrors to observe traffic behind or beside your vehicle. Then, signal with your turn signal and proceed safely.

Drivers should also turn around to check blind spots (areas not visible through mirrors) to avoid collisions. Some Ford models come equipped with a Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) that can help detect and alert drivers to vehicles potentially entering their blind spots.

Park safely

Vehicles typically travel at high speeds on highways, so stopping in the middle of the road is extremely dangerous and is strongly discouraged. If you must stop, find the nearest exit and a safe place to pull over.

However, in an emergency, such as a vehicle breakdown, try to pull over to the right side of the road and out of traffic before stopping. Turn on your hazard lights and place a warning sign about 50 meters behind your vehicle to alert other vehicles. Additionally, you should always keep a contact list in your vehicle that includes the phone numbers of local emergency services or the local Automobile Association so you can call for help when needed.

With the increasing number of highways being built across Asia, equipping yourself with the necessary skills and knowing how to handle highway driving is becoming increasingly important. Highway driving can be a different challenge compared to city driving, but it doesn't have to be a terrifying experience if you follow the tips above and practice safe driving habits.
